PLA Library Services

PLA Library Hours

Monday to Friday  |  8:30 am - 4:30 pm

PLA staff will be on-site during library hours to provide assistance in accessing PLA facilities. If you require assistance, please use the intercom button located on the wall of the column next to the book return bin. PLA access cards will be required to access PLA facilities (lounge and robing rooms) outside of library hours.

The library has 8 research computers available for use by counsel, articling students, and LPP candidates.

WestlawNext CanadaProvides access to case law, commentary and more. The following modules are available at the PLA: Family Source, Criminal Source, Estates & Trusts Source, Employment Source, and Law Source.
vLEXThis is a great resource to access an electronic library of texts published by Irwin Law. Is the print version not available in the library? It may be available through vLEX! You can also check out the Vincent AI system, a virtual legal assistant that can help you with your legal research. Click here for more information.

DivorceMate*This is a great tool for drafting your legal documents related to family law. This tool can be accessed for FREE by PLA Members. Non-members will be charged a fee of $25.00 (plus HST) to access it for the day.
HeinOnlineA comprehensive digital library containing the full text of more than 3,000 scholarly journals, access to U.S. federal and state case law, thousands of classic legal treatises, and a wealth of government publications as well as the English Reports.
This can only be accessed by staff. Let us know what you are looking for and we can search for material and send it to you electronically.

Available Remotely (Members ONLY)

RangeFindrThis Canadian criminal sentencing database is a great tool to use when searching for criminal sentencing ranges. Click on the tags related to your search and a list of cases will be generated indicating the sentences imposed. PLA Members can access this database remotely in the Members' Corner.
Non-Members do not have access to this database.

 


Remote Legal Research Services Available!

PLA Library staff can provide remote legal research services to lawyers, articling students and LPP Candidates. This includes research for materials such as case law, precedents, articles, checklists, etc. Library staff would be pleased to provide assistance with your legal research request. 

For more information or to submit a request, contact the PLA Library Staff.  PLA Members receive discounts on research services.

PLA Events, PLA Continuing Professional Development programmes

  • The PLA Library hosts events and educational programmes for lawyers in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario as well as articling students and LPP candidates, with proper identification.
  • Please visit our Events & CPDs page for upcoming dates and information, or contact Library Staff for more details to register.

  • PLA Members only - DISCOUNTED rates on PLA hosted events and CPD seminars/webinars with online registration available in the Members' Corner.
     

Locker Rentals

  • The PLA Library offers counsel the option to rent a locker for a day, or a week in the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse. The lockers are located within the PLA Robing Rooms, prior to entry the PLA Lawyers' Lounge. A PLA Swipe Card is required to access all PLA facilities.
  • Registration is on-site only.
  • PLA Members only - Access to yearly locker rental services, subject to availability.

PLA Access and Photo Identification Cards

PLA Access cards are required in order to access the PLA Facilities, which include the robing rooms, Lounge and Library. (Note: Access to the Library is only available during the hours noted above when staff are on-site. After hours access to the Library is not available.)

Staff will be available to create new PLA Access cards between the hours of 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM - 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday

Once staff receive your form, they will send you an email confirmation and also ask you to provide an approximate date and time you will come in to take your photo and pick-up your card.

Kindly note, if you have never made a PLA Access card before, the first card will be made free of charge. Replacement cards will be made for a fee of $25.00 (includes HST). If you wish to have a new photo taken for your card, this can be done for a fee of $10.00 (includes HST).

NOTE: PLA Access Cards are NOT membership cards and do not provide the user with Membership Benefits. PLA Access Cards ONLY PROVIDE ACCESS to the PLA Facilities.

The Brief Shop sells court attire and PLA merchandise including, but not limited to:

  • court tabs, cufflinks, umbrellas, USB keys, books bags, and more! Please contact Library Staff for more details.

PLA Members can purchase merchandise at DISCOUNTED rates.

As a PLA Member, you have the option of charging library rendered services on your Members' Account.

An invoice will be faxed or emailed to you for all services rendered on a particular day. Only the name of the member listed on the account may charge services to the account.
