Book Spotlights - Check out these new books at the PLA!

Posted by Peel Law Association on 3 May 2024

There were a number of great resources that were mentioned during the Law Society of Ontario's 18th Family Summit earlier this year.

The PLA has added a few of these resources to our library.

Information provided on Overcoming Barriers' website:

Overcoming the Alienation Crisis is a must-have resource for professionals and parents wanting to restore parent-child relationships. Psychologists Moran, McCall, and Sullivan present a balanced view of alienation, coparenting conflict dynamics, and parent-child resist refuse problems. Drawing on decades of experience as clinical forensic experts with family court cases, they drill down into the everyday challenges and dilemmas parents face when a child resists or refuses contact with a parent.

Why Read this Book?

Simply put, an alienation crisis is a malignancy for any family. The parent-child contact problem must be managed. Going to court is what you do when you’re down to nothing but bad choices. Our central concern is the emotional damage to children that accumulate from parent-child contact problems. Of course, parents worry about their child and want the parent-child contact problem to end. We hope this book helps parents to better understand and navigate the painful choices that confront the family in the wake of refusal, alienation, and justified rejection.

Information provided on Unhooked Media's website:

In this tenth anniversary edition of Don’t Alienate the Kids! attorney, mediator, and therapist Bill Eddy shows readers how to protect children from the harm of alienation and high-conflict divorce, boosting their resilience by teaching them to think flexibly, manage their emotions, and moderate their behaviors.

No one can solve this problem alone. That’s because the wall of alienation between parent and child is built by:

  1. the family’s own patterns of conflict
  2. family court professionals who get emotionally “hooked”
  3. society’s rapidly escalating culture of blame

Everyone involved must work together. This book shows how parents, family members, friends, counselors, lawyers, parenting coordinators, divorce coaches, and family court judges can become part of the solution, giving children a foundation of resilience that will last a lifetime.

Information provided on Dr. Warshak's website:

Dr. Warshak reveals:

  • the typical behaviors of alienated children,
  • how and why parents manipulate their children,
  • seven rules for responding effectively to bad-mouthing without succumbing to the impulse to retaliate in kind, and
  • how the controversial diagnosis parental alienation syndrome is used in court to take children away from parents or to regain contact with alienated children.

This groundbreaking work gives parents powerful strategies to preserve and rebuild loving relationships with their children--and provides legal and mental health professionals who work with families in which there have been accusations of alienation, whether true or false, practical advice to help their clients and safeguard the welfare of children.
